Back in his hometown with his dogs Risa and Vinnie, Iglesias said he has been sober for 14 months (he stopped drinking in November, four months before his break) and has begun to see a therapist to solve some of his problems .
"People think like comics, we're always in a good mood, but we're entangled," he says, adding that he plans to address the cancellation and his past problems in his One Show Fits All World Tour, which he launched over the weekend at Las Vegas. Vegas and includes a show in the hometown of the Staples Center in Los Angeles on January 26.
"I burned myself, uncle, twenty years of the same without interruptions. "I have not even taken a vacation," says Iglesias about his decision to cancel the dates of the 2017 tour, which he has already recovered. "I was not being creative anymore, it was becoming work, and I was not spending enough time at home and that was also taking its toll," he tells Billboard.
"I was also drinking a lot," he says. "I was not drinking to be sociable. I would drink because I just wanted to go to sleep. I was very stressed and the drink was exaggerating the problem. I was becoming careless, making bad decisions. "I was not being the best person at home, and I was not the best artist on the road."
He said there were some occasions when his team came to wake him up and we did not respond: "they thought something really bad had happened," he explains. It all fell apart in Dallas during a show when he joked about his 20-year-old son Frankie and his long-time girlfriend (whose name he does not reveal to protect his privacy)
"I got emotional on stage talking about the fact that my son is no longer a child. Now he is an adult, he is a man. And it hit me where I drowned, I left the stage and I just doubled over, "he says to Billboard." I fell down and said, "My God, what am I doing with myself? Yes, there are cars, yes, there is money, but I'm still happy, I have a child at home who has everything, but I did not have everything he could have. "
Iglesias said he later sat down with his son and said, "I'm sorry for all the years that were missing on birthdays, years when I was away from Christmas, years when I was away. I could have done better, and I could have been more involved, "says Iglesias." And he was amazing. He hugged me and said: "It's okay".
Iglesias said he still attends therapy and briefly attended 12-step meetings, but eventually left. "They say it's anonymous, but not when you're a celebrity," he said, adding that he has been sober since November 21, 2016.
"It sucks, because I enjoyed it, that little buzzing sensation," he said. "I'm not going to say, 'sobriety is fantastic, it's the best thing ever.' No, man, I miss having a drink, but I miss having a drink and having fun with my friends and being sociable." I do not miss that part of the story. Next morning when people are trying to wake you up and are worried that you're okay. "
Iglesias has remained busy since "the merger of 2017", as he calls it. He has also done voice work for a series of animated features in 2017, including Coco, The Job 2: Nutty by Nature and Smurfs: The Lost Village. He even appeared as a Dominican gangster for season 3 of Narcos in a shooting scene with members of the Colombian Cali cartel.
"I have a special on Netflix and I told them I'm a big fan of Narcos and I wanted to make a cameo on the show," he says. When the scene was used for a trailer, social networks lit up with happy fans of Vea al comediante in the violent program in Spanish.
"Netflix called me and they told me" the guys from Narcos are wondering why Fluffy trends, "he jokes.
Regarding his upcoming tour, Iglesias said he is excited to get back on the road with big shows planned for Phillips Arena in Atlanta (February 24), the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark (April 21) and the Great Allentown Fair. (August 30 in Pennsylvania.
"Growing up, I was always overweight, acne, teeth were in bad shape, I did not have all the friends in the world," he says. "Not much has changed, I have orthopedic devices, but I am still the chubby child, but the fact that people approach me (strangers) and look at me as I would with a cousin or uncle that I have not seen. A lot of time is such an incredible feeling, you know that you have already touched and made this person smile, you have made this person feel good, and now they know you and their expression is their thanks without even saying it. Wow, I did something good for this person, and that feels good. "
